The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over time the changes could result in the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term “evolution” comes from the Latin word”evolution” which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck’s disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the notion that species are evolving into new species in a gradual and predictable way.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and claim that it shouldn’t be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx – a feathered dino that is believed to be the bird’s ancestor.

It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religions, since the theory deals only with objects, events and processes in the physical world.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. For example, some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is important that science educators stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
Although these are alarming developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe the Bible is God’s word and should be taken literally. Although some creationists are not Christian, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most common type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs are not as well-known however they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution isn’t possible because it requires a miracle, and that the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation, and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also referred to as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from created kinds.” In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time, and that they grew gradually afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced last week that they would remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has secured its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. Its next target is to remove the finch-research of Darwin’s famed as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the “atheist materialism” that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR’s John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
